Abortion: A Liberal View
July 3rd 2008 03:59
Theres been a lot of anger about the issue of abortion around here lately. There also seems to be only pro-lifers who have anything to say on the subject. I want to present the other side of the argument in a resonable manner.
First, let me get this out of the way, I believe that abortion is morally wrong. Although I am not a woman, I would never encourage any woman I know to get an abortion. This isn't a religious view, I just feel its unnatural and immoral.
Even though I would never advise someone I know to get an abortion, that doesn't mean that there aren't millions of women around the world that still get abortions every day. Some of these women get abortions on a whim, they are young, or stupid, or frightened, or a combination of the three. Other women believe that it is their choice, and they believe this as ardently as many of you conservatives believe that abortion is evil. If they can't convince you that abortion isn't evil, than how do you think you can convince them that it is?
Furthermore, if the U.S. passed a law making abortion tantamount to murder, the fact is that there still would be millions of women attempting home abortions or going to illegal abortion clinics. Would there be a drop in the amount of abortions committed? Probably. But the many abortions still committed, albeit illegally, would result in more complications and deaths of the mothers who felt they had to get an abortion whether it was legal or illegal.
I believe that abortion is a personal decision, an issue (much like gay marriage) that the government shouldn't really be involved in. Understanding the issue of abortion isn't about telling people they're wrong or evil, its about realizing that nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes, we all do terrible things. If a woman is going to get an abortion no matter what, shouldn't she have the right for it to be done safely and professionaly?
