Clintons Eclipse Convention
August 27th 2008 19:13
I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels uneasy and a little disturbed by the amount of time and attention the Clinton's are getting at the Democratic National Convention. I was excited and a little nervous to see Hillary's speech, but the anxiety was soon replaced by something like a bad taste in my mouth.
One of the most confusing moments of the night was Hillary's introduction video that was played moments before she came out on stage. The video (lacking any references to Obama or his campaign) was a biography and promotional piece focusing solely on the senator from New York.
The video depicted her childhood and her die hard attitude in the primaries, painting her as a fighter and a champion of the people. By the end of the whole thing Obama was pushed to the back of my mind and I had a strange desire to vote for Hillary.
Her subsequent speech was okay; she bashed McCain and touted Obama as her choice for president. She lacked the rhetorical flare of Michelle Obama the previous night, but still got her point across. When the cameras weren't focused on her they switched to Bill Clinton, documenting his reactions to the video and the speech.
It short, it was a night devoted to the Clintons. Obama seemed a side note in the drama being played out not only within the Clinton clan, but between the Clintons and the media, and also between the Clinton supporters and the Obama supporters. I'm anxious to see if Obama gets the same sort of welcome from the crowd that Hillary received last night.
I know I'm not the first to say this, but there’s a tone of separation pervading the DNC. The Democrats are a force to be reckoned with this year, only strengthened by the failed policies of George W. But it feels as if their colossal base of support is split down the middle, like a cracked iceberg that’s slowly floating in opposite directions. Unfortunately, it’s going to take more than half an iceberg to take down the titanic GOP in November.
