Conservative Fear Mongering Hits a New Low
July 16th 2008 20:51
I have to almost laugh when I look at the photo of this billboard. Apparently they are being displayed throughout Florida and in some neighboring southern states. It should be noted that the Republican Party or John McCain supposedly has nothing to do with these incendiary displays. Instead they are being funded for by an Orlando businessman, Mike Meehan, who likes to preach that it was Clinton's fault that 9/11 ever occurred, and that it was democrats who should have put a stop to Osama Bin Laden.
I have to contest these claims, although I don't like to judge a person's leadership by the party they are a part of, I will judge a person by their judgments and their work ethic, two departments in which George W. is lacking. According to the 9/11 commission there were numerous reports put on Bush's desk warning of an imminent Al-Qaeda attack on the U.S., reports that, because of their length, failed to grab Bush's attention. Furthermore, never mind that Clinton never captured Osama Bin Laden, what about Bush? It’s been seven friggin years and two invasions since Osama Bin Laden terrorized our country, and yet the Bush administration has come up frustratingly short.
Its easy to do this though, go back and forth, arguing over which president was better or did more or was smarter. The truth is, ads like the ones that are being displayed in Florida are tasteless and offensive whether you are Republican or Democrat. The small percentage of people that accept these sort of ads are the people who already would never vote democratic. Unfortunately for Meehan, the majority of the people who view these ads will be disgusted by them, and since Florida is full of disenfranchised Republicans, polarizing and offensive displays are only going to push people away from the Republican Party.
The American people have made a statement these past years, its time for change. Whether it is the drastic change of Obama, or a more subtle change of McCain, the fear mongering, saber rattling days of the Bush era are (hopefully) gone for a long while. Here's to you Meehan, and the promise that your billboards are doing you and your party more harm than good.
