Drill Baby Drill

I am no environmentalist, if drilling will help lower gas prices, so be it. But is drilling now really going to alleviate the energy crisis?
The surge for an increase in drilling lately has been unprecedented, and has even now resulted in a bill being moved through Congress which will allow limited offshore drilling with the permission of individual states. After all it is an election year, and you gotta give the people what they want, and they want to drill; even though both canidates have admitted that drilling will not change the prices of oil anytime soon. Really Long Link
Am I the only one that feels a little cheated by this idea? Even the gas tax holiday that McCain and Hillary promoted during the primaries would have saved us 50 bucks over the course of a few months. This drilling idea saves us nothing. Even more so since the drilling bill is a watered down version of the original, faded by the partisan policies of this impotent Congress.
People have to understand that oil is a thing of the past, its expensive and its finite, there’s only so much. I know we can't phase out fossil fuels immediately, but its going to happen relatively soon, so why the new enthusiasm for drilling? It would be like right as Ford's Model T was becoming popular, the government deciding its going to increase railroad construction. Stupid.
We have reached a turning point in history, the Model T era is over. Instead of investing in gas fueled cars and new oil rigs; we should be investing in electric cars, wind energy, solar energy, and biofuels. The 'drill baby drill' mantra, although silly and brutally worded, is a desperate plea by the masses to get us out of this energy miasma. Both Obama and McCain need to remind people that the relief they so desire is in future technologies, not in that black sticky goo of the past.
