McCain's VP Pick: A Hot, Young, Alaskan?
August 29th 2008 18:17
First of all (according to CNN) Sarah Palin enjoys hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. Her favorite food? Moose Stew. These facts alone make her okay in my book. Did I also mention she used to be a model? There’s nothing better than imagining a good looking woman riding around on a snowmobile with a shotgun thrown over one shoulder and a stringer of fish over the other. In all seriousness though, I think that McCain made a risky pick that has a strong chance of paying off in November.
So what are the advantages of McCain picking Palin as his VP besides the fact that she enjoys eating large mammals? Well the obvious pro is that she is a woman, and that I'm sure McCain is looking to attract disenfranchised Hillary voters to his corner. Furthermore, her husband is a commercial fisherman who belongs to the local steel workers union, thus, McCain will also be attracting blue collar voters who view Obama as elitist.
As a liberal, I also liked how adamant she was during her speech about not only reforming Washington's politics but the "good old boy" mentality associated with it.
The major downside to Palin is her inexperience. She is only forty four years old and is the first term governor of Alaska. Before she was governor, she was mayor of the small town she lived in, before that; she was on the school board. Not exactly an impressive political resume. Moreover, she has five children ranging from 19 years to 6 months old, the youngest of which has downs syndrome. This could prove to be distracting to say the least.
I think that Palin's good qualities outweigh the bad and that although some may view this pick as a gamble, I feel that McCain stands to win out in the end. Really, both candidates chose a VP that balance out their short comings. Obama being the inexperienced and controversial nominee chose a VP that was older, safer, and that had been around Washington. On the other hand, McCain, being the old, safe, conservative nominee chose a VP who was sensational if not inexperienced. It will be interesting to see if Palin can make it in the hard hitting politics of a presidential campaign.
