Palin's 17 Year Old Daughter is Pregnant!
September 1st 2008 17:02
Sarah Palin, the VP choice for John McCain, just announced that her seventeen year old daughter, Bristol Palin, is pregnant. Apparently she made the announcement to denounce rumors that she faked her own pregnancy to cover for her daughter. Palin has stated that her daughter plans to keep the baby and to marry the father of the child.
One of the more surprising bits of information associated with this story is that McCain apparently knew that Bristol was pregnant when he picked Palin for his VP.
What does this mean for the GOP? Nothing good that's for sure. In a week in which McCain must sideline his convention plans in order to deal with Gustav, news like this can only worsen the headaches and the stress that must be rampant throughout the GOP.
Both the pregnancy and the hurricane, while unfortunate on drastically different levels, provide McCain and his VP a chance to prove their character. While the hurricane disrupts and overshadows the GOP convention, it provides an opportunity for McCain to act presidential, to show America he cares more about his country than some political party up north. And in the end (despite the fact that the convention is getting ZERO news coverage) this unfortunate event may help McCain.
However, the pregnancy is a slightly different story. It provides the same sort of opportunity in that Palin can assert her pro-life stance and affirm her love and support for her daughter. But a pre-marital, teen pregnancy is no act of God. These things can be prevented, unlike colossal and destructive storms.
On a GOP ticket that touts family values, I'm sure there will be some that will claim a healthy Christian family should promote and enforce abstinence. I for one am not saying that. As a godless liberal I have no problem with pre-marital sex (although the fact that she's 17 is unsettling). I mean, the Palins live in Alaska, you gotta do something to alleviate the boredom.
