Some Thoughts on Elitism
August 28th 2008 20:19
While following the Democratic National Convention I like to flip between the three main news stations. I especially am interested in what Fox has to say given that watching MSNBC cover democrats is like watching an exercise in ass kissing. (It goes the same way for Fox and the GOP)
While watching Fox I was a little disturbed by the frequent use of the word elite or elitist. While Fox didn't directly accuse Obama of being elitist, the fact that they bring up the issue is enough to get the word and idea stuck in people's heads. But I say to you, what's wrong with being elitist?
Isn't John McCain an elitist? A son of an admiral with somewhere around five houses? Isn't Bush an elitist, or Clinton, or Kennedy, or Roosevelt, or almost any other American president? To be elite or elitist means that you're better than everyone else and you know it. It means you've secured a piece of space in the upper tax bracket for yourself and loved ones through a life of hard work. It means you're the best of the best of the best.
Isn't that exactly what we want in a president? Someone who's confident and successful enough to say, "I'm the best, and I know I can lead the greatest country in the world." If a guy exactly like me ran for president I would have very hard time voting for him. What're we waiting for, some coal miner or gas station clerk to pick up the presidential mantle and shout, "Me! I'm worthy!"
No, we would never accept that. Everyone knows, whether left or right, that we want someone who is elite, the cream of the crop, so to speak. But somehow the media has turned the tables on this concept, labeling Obama as an elitist, telling us we shouldn't vote for him because he's better than us. But isn't that the exact reason we SHOULD be voting for him?
I don't know about you, but when I vote, I will vote for the man I believe is not only better than me, but better than most.

Angry Electorate
Elitist has a negative connotation. Elite does not. Check dictionary.com if you need a good reference.
